I want to tell you a story about a close colleague and dear friend of mine—an osteopathic internal medicine physician and educator, and without question the most compassionate doctor I know. No one advocates harder for her patients. No one worries more about our residents. If caring were an Olympic sport, she’d have multiple gold medals and still be apologizing for not doing more.
Resident physician Pranati Shah, DO, is the 2025 winner of the David Susser DO, MACOI Award, an honor that reflects the authenticity and determination with which she pursues internal medicine and oncology. In her statement accepting that award, she shared that her goal as a physician is always “to help as many people as possible.” This idea is a powerful guiding force in her work and life.
We are less than six months away from the biggest gathering of osteopathic internists anywhere in the world, and I can’t help but be excited for the opportunity to meet new people, learn new things, and nurture genuine relationships. Reflecting on National Osteopathic Medicine Week 2026
National Osteopathic Medicine Week (April 13-19, 2026) is a profound opportunity to pause and reflect on the enduring impact and distinctive contributions of osteopathic physicians across our nation.
Like many physicians, I used to think of burnout as a terminal, one-time event. Once you are burned out, that’s it—career over, passion gone, identity shattered. What I learned instead is something far more hopeful: burnout can be a process, and recovery—while neither quick nor linear—is possible.
Each year, ACOI honors its members with awards that reflect their impressive contributions to the osteopathic internal medicine community. Nominations are now open for the 2026 Teacher of the Year, Researcher of the Year, and Internist of the Year awards.
