The Robert G. Good, DO, MACOI Student Leadership Award recognizes an outstanding osteopathic medical student leader who exemplifies the dedication, commitment, and selfless service that is the hallmark of Dr. Robert G. Good’s professional career. At the core of Dr. Good is his commitment to his family, faith, patients, and the development of future osteopathic internal medicine leaders. The Robert G. Good, DO, MACOI Student Leadership Award is an annual award presented to the student leader who shows strong promise of commitment to selfless service, leadership, lifelong learning, and the continued growth of osteopathic internal medicine.
Student Leadership Award Criteria
Candidates for the Robert G. Good, DO, MACOI Student Leadership Award will have distinguished themselves in the following areas:
- Organizational Leadership
- Leadership Roles: Evidence of holding significant leadership positions (e.g., president, vice president, committee chair, national representative) within internal medicine organizations such as the ACOI Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association (SOIMA), the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA), or similar national bodies.
- Initiative & Impact: Demonstrated ability to initiate, lead, or contribute to projects, events, or advocacy campaigns that advance the mission of osteopathic internal medicine or osteopathic medicine nationally.
- Collaboration: Established a record of working effectively with peers, faculty, and external partners to achieve organizational goals.
- Mentorship: Participated in mentoring programs or activities that support the professional development of fellow students.
- Academic Excellence
- Academic Achievement: Demonstrated a consistent record of high academic performance (e.g., GPA, honors, awards, or scholarships).
- Research & Scholarship: Engaged in research activities, presentations at conferences, or publication of scholarly work relevant to osteopathic internal medicine.
- Professional Development: Participated in educational programs, workshops, or training modules that enhance clinical and leadership skills.
- Advocacy for Patient Care
- Patient Advocacy: Actively involved in initiatives that promote patient-centered care, health equity, and / or public health within the osteopathic internal medicine community.
- Community Service: Participated in volunteer and / or outreach activities that demonstrate commitment to improving patient outcomes, especially in underserved populations.
- Policy Engagement: Participated in advocacy efforts at the local, state, or national level to influence healthcare policy or improve patient care standards.
- Ethical Practice: Uphold and promote ethical standards in clinical practice and organizational activities.
Eligibility:
ACOI members who are current students at an osteopathic medical school accredited by the American Osteopathic Association.
Application Requirements:
Submit the following materials to acoi@acoi.org:
- Personal Statement: A reflective essay describing the student’s leadership philosophy, accomplishments, and vision for advancing osteopathic internal medicine and patient care.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): Detailed documentation of leadership roles, academic achievements, research, and advocacy activities.
- Letters of Recommendation: At least one faculty letter attesting to the student’s leadership, academic excellence, and advocacy efforts.
- Transcript: Unofficial transcript to verify academic standing.
Honorarium:
One recipient will receive a $1,000 cash prize and up to a $1,500 travel stipend to attend and accept the award at the Convocation of Fellows & Awards Ceremony on Friday, October 9, at ACOI 2026 in Palm Springs, California.
Timeline:
- Applications Due: June 30, 2026
- Review Period: July 2026
- Committee Review: Following a review of applications and all supporting documentation, the Osteopathic Medical Education Continuum Council (OMECC) will select a recipient.
- Awardee Notification: August 2026
About Robert G. Good, DO, MACOI
Robert G. Good, DO, MACOI, graduated from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. Following graduation, he practiced as a family physician before completing his residency training in internal medicine at Sun Coast Hospital in Florida. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to the care of his patients and the development of future physician leaders who share his passion for compassionate high-quality patient-centered care.
Recognizing the critical role physician leaders play in an ever-changing health care delivery system, Dr. Good has held leadership positions in many local, state, and national organizations. His dedication to patient care and osteopathic internal medicine goes well beyond the bedside. He is a past Board member and president of ACOI. He serves as a mentor to innumerable students, residents, and practicing physicians. He works tirelessly to identify and develop the leaders of tomorrow who will continue the practice of selfless service to their patients, communities, and the ACOI.
Always looking for opportunities to develop future student leaders, Dr. Good has provided Visiting Professor lectures all over the country. Through these lectures, Dr. Good exposes students to osteopathic internal medicine and all it has to offer as a career and vocation. Early into the COVID-19 pandemic, he developed the Student Osteopathic Leadership and Internal Medicine and Dialogue (SOLID) program to connect student leaders and to keep them engaged and connected with one another. This program has grown and evolved into a lecture series that benefits students throughout their medical school careers and beyond residency. This is in addition to his work developing a student-specific series of lectures that has become an integral part of the Annual Convention. His commitment to student development and ACOI is second to none.
At the core of Dr. Good’s efforts is his commitment to his family, faith, patients, and the development of future osteopathic internal medicine leaders. The Robert G.
