As National Osteopathic Medicine Week takes center stage, it's a profound opportunity to pause and reflect on the enduring impact and distinctive contributions of osteopathic physicians across our nation. At the very core of our shared philosophy lies a commitment to the whole-person approach – an intricate understanding that true healing extends beyond merely treating symptoms or diseases. We champion proactive health strategies, emphasize lifestyle choices, and honor the body's remarkable inherent capacity for self-regulation and restoration. In an era where healthcare faces complex challenges, these foundational principles resonate with unprecedented relevance. Supporting our wonderful osteopathic profession is an experience I think every DO should have at least once in a lifetime!
Our founder, A.T. Still, MD, DO, was a visionary far ahead of his time – a true polymath who transcended the traditional boundaries of medicine. More than just a physician, he was an inventor, a philosopher, and a relentless innovator who steadfastly refused to accept the limitations and often-ineffective practices prevalent in 19th-century medicine. Long before it became conventional wisdom, Dr. Still dared to conceptualize the human body in an entirely new light, challenging established paradigms and pioneering a revolutionary system of healing that continues to shape modern medical practice today.
Here at Rocky Vista University, we are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of osteopathic leaders. Our students are immersed in a dynamic curriculum that skillfully integrates medical science with the nuanced, hands-on application of osteopathic manipulative treatment. We instill in them the profound importance of deep listening, critical thinking, and a truly holistic perspective, ensuring they graduate as doctors who are not only scientifically proficient but also profoundly empathetic, capable of forging meaningful connections that lead to transformative patient care.
This week also serves as a powerful testament to the extraordinary growth and increasing recognition of our profession. The osteopathic medical community is flourishing, now boasting over 150,000 DOs who practice across every medical specialty. Each brings a distinct philosophy to healthcare – one that patients are increasingly seeking out for its comprehensive, patient-centered approach. The future looks incredibly bright, with nearly 40,000 osteopathic medical students currently in training nationwide. We are particularly proud of this year's record-high match rate of 92.6% for DO graduates, with a significant 57.3% of our seniors matching into critical primary care fields such as family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology.
Today, let us collectively extend our deepest gratitude and special appreciation to our dedicated students, amazing faculty, and the countless practicing DOs who embody these vital principles every single day. Their commitment and compassionate service undeniably make a lasting difference in the lives of the patients we are privileged to serve.
