ACOI Honors John Arthur, DO, with 2026 Anthony J. Malcoun, DO, MACOI Emerging Leader Award

The American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI), a national professional organization representing osteopathic internal medicine physicians and subspecialists, has selected John Arthur, DO, as the 2026 recipient of the Anthony J. Malcoun, DO, MACOI Emerging Leader Award. Dr. Arthur will be presented with the award at ACOI 2026 in Palm Springs, California.

Established in 2024, the Anthony J. Malcoun, DO, MACOI Emerging Leader Award honors the legacy of Dr. Malcoun, an extraordinary osteopathic internist, educator, and past ACOI President whose compassion, humility, and dedication to patient care and mentorship continue to inspire the profession. This award recognizes early career physicians who reflect these same qualities and demonstrate a strong commitment to leadership, service, and excellence in internal medicine.

Dr. Arthur is a board-certified internal medicine physician and Major Select in the United States Air Force, currently serving as a staff physician at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University, and serves on the academic faculty of the Wright State University Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Arthur has previously served as the Resident Representative to the ACOI Board of Directors. Currently, he serves as an ACOI Visting Professor as well as a founding champion of the ACOI STRIDE program. Dr. Arthur’s service to the osteopathic community also includes being a member of the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Emerging Leaders Resolutions Committee, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Dayton District Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, an Ohio Delegate to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) House of Delegates, and a participant in the AOA Leadership Academy Class of 2026.

Robert G. Good, DO, MACOI, a dedicated ACOI member who is a past Board member, Past President, and the creator of the Student Osteopathic Leadership and Internal Medicine and Dialogue (SOLID) program, offered his wholehearted recommendation of Dr. Arthur for this award:

“I have had the privilege of mentoring Dr. Arthur for the past 5 years in leadership development, particularly in the areas of medical student and resident education. During this time, I have witnessed firsthand his exceptional professionalism, his unwavering commitment to the osteopathic profession, and his natural ability to inspire learners at every level. ... Through his professionalism, community service, and devotion to teaching the art of medicine, Dr. Arthur has already made a meaningful impact on our profession. His potential for continued leadership is extraordinary.” 

In addition, Kelsey R. Wilson, DO, MEd-HPE, FAACP, the Program Director of the Wright Patterson Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency, shared these words in her letter of nomination:

“Upon joining our faculty, Dr. Arthur’s impact was immediate. Within our program of 80 residents, he eagerly serves as an Academic Advisor, Coach, inpatient attending, outpatient preceptor, and Military Unique Curriculum Chair. Highlighting his maturity and peer respect, he was recently selected as the Clinical Competency Sub-Committee Chair for the 2026-2027 academic year—a remarkable feat for a junior faculty member. Dr. Arthur embodies the qualities of an emerging leader: integrity, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to service. I can think of no candidate more deserving of this prestigious recognition.”
