The Impact of ACOI Committee Work

As a future physician, it is important to find a cause you’re passionate about—something to fuel you throughout medical school and beyond. Internal medicine and osteopathic medicine share the principles of treating diverse populations and acknowledging the interconnected experiences that can shape a person’s health. Well-rounded patient care relies on the expectation that physicians understand the social influences that can affect our patients’ lives.
ACOI provides medical students with meaningful opportunities to practice these principles and play a role in advocacy through committee involvement. This year, I had the opportunity to observe the formation of the PRIDE committee. Committees give students the chance to make an impact beyond the classroom and provide an avenue to learn from seasoned physicians. Even before attending the Annual Convention in October, I was able to connect with experienced physicians who were committed to advancing the same cause.
Just know that you are never “just a medical student.” Your insight is valuable to advancing medical education and patient care. Being a part of a committee gives you a seat at the table, allowing you to offer your unique perspective. I am thankful to ACOI for giving me the opportunity to advocate for students and patients within the LGBTQIA+ community. If the opportunity ever arises to get more involved with ACOI, I encourage you to take it.
