Striking a Match: SOIMA President Emily Ranta on the Couples Match
As osteopathic medical students everywhere gear up for Match Week, a few of them are in unique situations. One of those is couples match, which Emily Ranta (OMS IV, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas), President of the Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association (SOIMA), is participating in with her husband, Josh Ranta (OMS IV, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas).
March Student of the Month: Asmihan Annamer, OMS-I
Student Doctor Annamer was nominated for her exemplary positivity in her attitude, approach, and dedication to her learning experience. She is, at all times, present, engaged, prepared, and on the mark.
When it comes to health awareness, most people don't tend to think of the kidneys before, for example, the heart or lungs. And yet these hardworking organs enable so many essential metabolic regulations; Carol Kirila, DO, MACOI, deems them “just plain fascinating.” And she firmly believes everyone should pay as much attention to their kidney function as they do other processes when they visit their doctor or have lab work completed.
In December 2024, ACOI member Ryan Morgan, DO, FACOI, was appointed to the Oklahoma Advancement of Wellness Advisory Council. His term began just a month ago, in January 2025, and while it is still a bit early to know what to expect, he is hopeful it will be an opportunity to help make some positive health policy changes.
February Student of the Month: Ahad Khatri, OMS-III
Student Doctor Khatri was nominated for his exemplary commitment to patient care and his relentless pursuit of excellence. Ahad consistently goes above and beyond in his role as a student physician and demonstrates an unwavering dedication to his patients that sets him apart from his peers. His most commendable qualities is his willingness to put in extra hours to ensure he has a comprehensive understanding of each patient’s needs. He does not view his role as a mere obligation, but instead he approaches it with a genuine passion for making a positive difference in patients lives.
Charlene LePane, DO, MBA, FACOI: Igniting Positive Change through Innovation
At ACOI 2024, a lecture on AI and Medicine drew a great deal of attention – unsurprisingly, given the rapid nature with which AI has grown and found its way into different fields, including health care. That talk was given by Charlene LePane, DO, MBA, MSPH, FACOI, FACG, an internist, gastroenterologist, and ACOI Board Member who serves as Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) at AdventHealth-Central Florida Division.
January Student of the Month: Justin Brown-Gnarra, OMS II
Student Doctor Brown-Gnarra was nominated for his standout leadership skills in multiple capacities. Ranked 7th in his class, his commitment to academic excellence is evident. His long-term goal of practicing Medical Oncology in an academic setting reflects his dedication to advancing both clinical practice and medical education.
