Established in 2024, this award honors the legacy of Anthony J. Malcoun, DO, MACOI, who demonstrated excellence in clinical teaching in the field of nephrology. Dr. Malcoun was known for outstanding compassion in his delivery of care and his respectful approach with his patients, their families, and his healthcare colleagues.

The Malcoun Award is granted to a nephrology fellow who demonstrates and excels in the following:

  • Sense of compassion and care for others;
  • Cultural sensitivity;
  • Welcoming opportunities for teaching and one-on-one mentorships;
  • Leading by example in professional and ethical behavior;
  • Concern for the community and engagement in volunteer activities; and
  • Superior knowledge and intellectual curiosity.

Dr. Salupo is currently in his second year of a nephrology and hypertension fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. After receiving his DO at Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana, he completed his internal medicine residency at Kettering Grandview Medical Center in Dayton, OH in 2023. There, Dr. Salupo was Chief Resident from 2022 to 2023.

Dr. Salupo’s many accomplishments include winning first place for Scholarly Activity at the Cleveland Academy of Osteopathic Medicine Winter Update in 2024 and 2025; being selected as the 2024 American Academy of Osteopathy Resident of the Year; and being the first two-time recipient of the Grandview Medical Center A.T. Still Spirit of Osteopathy Award. During his fellowship, he has also assisted with the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine nephrology course, facilitated lectures on Humanism in Medicine for Cleveland Clinic internal medicine residents, and worked with the National Kidney Foundation and American Society of Nephrology on an initiative to expand dialysis access.

In his letter of nomination, Dr. Jonathan Taliercio, DO, FASN, the Nephrology Fellowship Program Director at Cleveland Clinic, shared these words about Dr. Salupo:

“Dr. Salupo understands that nephrology requires life-long learning and adaptation. Not only is he receptive to feedback but he goes above and beyond to seek challenges to grow. In addition to successfully completing a clinically intense first year of fellowship he has, on average, been presenting scholarly activity every other month of his fellowship. [...] During his short time in fellowship, Nick’s passion and boundless energy have shown that the future of nephrology is bright.”
