Charge of the ACOI Osteopathic Medical Education Continuum Council (OMECC)
1. Justification
The mission of the ACOI is to promote high-quality, distinctive osteopathic care of the adult. The ACOI recognizes that the promotion of high-quality patient care begins on the first day of medical school and continues throughout one’s career. Providing a professional home for osteopathic medical students, residents, and fellows across the continuum of medical education is a priority for ACOI. The OMECC recognizes the evolution of a medical career and provides community and support at every stage through strategic engagement with students, residents, and fellows to support life-long learning.
2. Objectives
- Identify and facilitate access to resources across the learning continuum.
- Support the development of a cohesive community of students, residents, and fellows.
- Promote engagement efforts with medical students, residents, and fellows across the continuum of medical education.
- Recognize through ACOI’s activities and initiatives that beneficial programming differs at the preclinical, clinical, and resident and fellow levels.
- Support efforts to advance and expand regular programming that recognizes preclinical, clinical, and resident and fellow needs.
- Support efforts to advance and expand the Visiting Professor program through continued evaluation and innovation.
- Promote the development and operation of a national Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association and chapters at all colleges of osteopathic medicine.
- Promote Osteopathic Recognition through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
- Promote research opportunities.
- Support efforts to advance and grow interest in internal medicine and subspecialty training programs.
- Promote and advance mentorship.
- Encourage osteopathic board certification.
3. Council Composition and Terms of Service
- The Council shall consist of at least ten (10) members selected by the President. The President shall choose the Chair and Co-Chair from the Council membership for a term of one (1) year. A Chair and Co-Chair may serve consecutive years.
- Council members shall serve a term of one (1) year. Council members may serve up to 5 terms.
- The Council shall consist of at least the following members:
- Chair
- Co-chair
- President of the ACOI’s Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association
- Medical school faculty
- Resident
- Fellow
- A member of the ACOI Research Committee
- At-large members
4. Accountability
A report shall be submitted to the Board of Directors at least annually. The Chair and Co-Chair of the Council shall determine in concert with the Council membership, the frequency of meetings to conduct the business of the Council and accomplish the charge set forth.
5. Responsible Staff Person
The Executive Director or staff appointee shall be assigned to the Council to facilitate the Council’s operation. The Executive Director or staff representative may serve as the Secretary of the Council.
6. Self-Evaluation Plan
The Council shall evaluate itself annually. The evaluation shall provide for a review of the Council activity, a reporting of participation of the Council members, and a review of any actions taken, or recommendations made by the Council. The emphasis of the report should relate to the mission of the ACOI and the enhancement of member value.
