Why Every Student Should Experience the ACOI Convention: A Snapshot of My Experience

If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s worth juggling rotation schedules, looming exams, and a couple of flight delays just to attend a medical conference—let me save you the suspense: it absolutely is. The 2025 ACOI Annual Convention in Marco Island, Florida, was one of the most inspiring, educational, and unexpectedly fun experiences of my medical school journey so far. From day one, it was clear that this wasn’t just a conference—it was a community of physicians, residents, and students who genuinely care about lifting one another up.
One of the highlights of my trip was presenting my research poster and—through a mix of hard work, my Principal Investigator Dr. Lightfoot’s guidance, and a little luck—earning second place in the Student Research Poster Presentation competition. The experience was both humbling and motivating, especially seeing the breadth of innovative projects my fellow students brought to the table. What stood out even more than the award, however, was how the judges, including Dr. Baker and Dr. McClanahan, didn’t just evaluate—they educated. Their feedback was as valuable as it was kind, helping me view my project from new perspectives and transforming the entire experience into a collaborative learning opportunity rather than a competition.

The educational sessions and interactive case discussions were equally memorable. I had a blast at the patient case discussion sessions hosted by Dr. Good, Dr. Arthur, and Dr. Tito—imagine “Jeopardy” for internal medicine but with more laughter and learning. Collaborating in teams to solve patient cases was both exciting and motivating, especially while witnessing the depth of knowledge my peers brought to each discussion. Another highlight was attending the Women Physicians Reception, where Dr. Enright, ACOI Past President, delivered an empowering message encouraging female medical students and physicians to embrace leadership and build supportive communities. Her words truly resonated with me and reminded me of the importance of mentorship and representation in medicine.
Equally meaningful was the Rowan–SOM alumni reception, where I connected with accomplished graduates who generously shared their advice on navigating residency, career choices, and maintaining balance in life—lessons no textbook could ever teach. Throughout the convention, I also had the privilege of meeting inspiring physicians and leaders, including Dr. Déry, Dr. Brecher, and Dr. Hasty, who took the time to get to know me and share their insights. Beyond professional growth, the convention was also a time for friendship and connection. Meeting osteopathic medical students from across the country—each with unique stories, aspirations, and incredible enthusiasm—was truly energizing. A special shoutout to my 2024–25 NSOIMA e-board colleagues and to Jeremy and Kara, the Medical Student and Resident Program Associate and Manager, for their camaraderie and support throughout the event. I left truly inspired—not only to return to the convention next year but also to seek more opportunities to enhance student engagement with ACOI in any way possible.

So, if you’re a student on the fence about attending next year’s ACOI Convention—consider this your sign to go for it. Submit that research poster you’ve been meaning to polish, or just show up ready to connect, and become part of a community that celebrates curiosity, collaboration, and growth. Come for the knowledge, stay for the connections, and leave with renewed purpose—and maybe even a few lifelong friends. The ACOI Convention isn’t just an event—it’s a reminder that medicine is a shared journey, and the best way to grow is together. (Bonus: the free notepads are excellent, too!)
