Welcome Letter from the SOIMA Secretary

Welcome! As we approach the finish line of this academic year, I want to take a moment to recognize how much you have accomplished. I hope you finish strong and take time to reflect on the knowledge, resilience, and growth you have developed along the way.

I’d like to share a few reminders:

Prioritize Self-Care and Mental Health
Medical school is a marathon, not a sprint. The demands can be intense, and burnout is real. Setting boundaries, maintaining hobbies, and nurturing a life outside of medicine are not luxuries – they are essential. These habits not only sustain your well-being but also preserve the empathy, resilience, and focus that define great osteopathic physicians.

Comparison Is the Thief of Joy
Your path is uniquely yours. You have already achieved so much. Focusing on your own progress – rather than comparing yourself to others – helps prevent unnecessary stress and self-doubt. Measure your progress against who you were yesterday, not someone else’s timeline. You belong here. The world doesn’t need more imitation – it needs more of you.

Be Curious and Humble
As you transition into new phases of your training, stay curious and open to learning. No one expects you to have all the answers – they expect you to ask thoughtful questions. Humility and curiosity foster growth, strengthen collaboration, and allow us to learn from one another. Strive to be present, not perfect.

The Power of Connection
Medicine is built on human connection. Often, the relationships we form carry as much healing power as the treatments we provide. Surround yourself with people who support and challenge you. Lean into your community – these relationships are among the most powerful tools we have to combat burnout and sustain purpose. Sometimes, simply sharing a moment with someone else can make the challenges feel lighter.

As you move forward, I encourage you to lean on one another and take full advantage of what ACOI has to offer. This community is built on mentorship, connection, and meaningful relationships, and it has been a privilege to form lasting friendships through it.

Please never hesitate to reach out – we are always here for you.

I am incredibly proud of how far you have come, and I am excited to see all that you will accomplish next.

Stay True to Why You Pursued Medicine.
