Hi everyone!
When we reach another academic year, people are at various stages of the residency application process. For those in their third year, the residency applications still seem like something that will happen in the future, whereas students in their fourth year have already handed in their applications and are now getting ready for the interviews. Whatever stage you're at in this process, it is a thrilling period of your medical school experience, and that is why I would like to offer you a few words of encouragement.
- For third-year students: Begin to prepare as early as possible since you don’t have to have all your plans worked out at this moment. Take this year to explore different areas of interest, establish relationships with mentors, find out more about various programs, and think about the experiences that have influenced you. The earlier you start preparing, the more at ease you’ll be when application season comes around.
- For those who are in their fourth year: Believe in the effort you've already invested. It really is a significant achievement to submit your application! As you move into interview season, keep in mind that your application is a reflection of years of hard work, growth, and dedication. Do take the time to acknowledge how far you've come and see each subsequent step as a chance to show who you are.
- For all of you: There's no need to fear asking for help. Although the residency process may seem overwhelming, it's not necessary to go through it by yourself. You should seek advice and support from your classmates, mentors, advisors, other residents, and the ACOI community.
ACOI has produced a video outlining the ERAS process in order to help students get a better understanding of and navigate the residency process. I suggest that all of you make use of this resource and the support offered by ACOI. Keep an eye out for more resources that will assist you with the next stages of this process as well!
Above all, it is essential that you keep in mind the fact that all individual journeys are different. Even if you experience periods of uncertainty, this doesn't mean that you are falling behind. Proceed step by step, have confidence in yourself, and don't forget that both SOIMA and ACOI are there to support you at every stage of your journey.
Here's to everyone having a successful year and a successful residency application season!
