New Fraud Schemes Target Health Care Providers

by ACOI

July 25, 2025

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has published an alert on fraud schemes targeting Medicare providers that involve bad actors impersonating CMS and sending phishing fax requests for medical records and documentation, falsely claiming to be part of a Medicare audit. CMS does not initiate audits by requesting medical records via fax.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) also issued a warning about new fraud schemes in which scammers impersonate DEA personnel and notify registrants they are under investigation. The DEA has received reports of false letters and phone calls being used to contact both DEA registrants and non-registrants. It is not the DEA’s practice to call registrants regarding investigative matters. You may report any incident to the FBI at www.ic3.gov.
