Letter from the SOIMA Secretary

Welcome! It’s great to be back with another issue of our ACOI Student Spotlight newsletter. The semester is already moving quickly, and with it comes new challenges, opportunities, and milestones to celebrate.
No matter where you are in your training—finding your footing in the classroom, balancing the intensity of preclinical studies, stepping into patient care, or navigating your final preparations for residency—you’re moving forward on a path that matters. And along that path, you are not alone. You are surrounded by peers, mentors, and a larger community that understands the journey and stands ready to support you—so lean on others when you need it.
One thing I’ve learned this semester is how much growth happens in the small, quiet moments—reviewing one more concept, showing up for a classmate, or taking a breath before a busy day. Those moments build the habits, resilience, and compassion that shape us into the physicians we hope to become.
This semester, challenge yourself to grow not only in knowledge but also in resilience, compassion, and teamwork. Remember:
- Celebrate small wins—every skill mastered or tough week finished is worth acknowledging.
- Build professional habits now—punctuality, follow-through, and communication are as vital as clinical knowledge.
- Embrace feedback—each correction is a step toward becoming a stronger physician.
- Prioritize wellness check-ins—tend to your mental health as carefully as your studies.
- Practice active learning—teach back, quiz yourself, and apply knowledge to real cases.
The ACOI is here to walk with you every step of the way, offering updates, opportunities, mentorship, and inspiration to help you thrive.
Here’s to the weeks ahead—may they bring you growth, connection, and momentum as you continue building the physician you are meant to become. I can’t wait to see all that this year holds for each of you and the incredible ways you’ll continue to represent our ACOI student community.
With gratitude and encouragement,
Troy Holsworth, OMS-II
