KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Medical Patent Reform System, Friday, October 21

For years physicians and patients have been worried about the epidemic of escalating drug prices and the adverse effects this trend has had on the American consumer and health system. Priti Krishtel, who co-founded the nonprofit organization, the Initiative for Medicines, Access, and Knowledge, will appear to discuss her mission to build a more just and equitable drug patent system that improves access to life-saving medications. Priti’s organization has expanded to 49 countries and 33 therapies for 16 diseases, including hepatitis C, HIV, leukemia, tuberculosis, diabetes, cancer, and blood-related disorders. For HIV treatments alone, I-MAK has helped government health programs around the globe save more than $2 billion. She’ll open our eyes and share her experiences in this passionate endeavor.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS: The Agony and Ecstasy of 21st Century Medicine, Saturday, October 22

Wellness remains an important topic for our members. But how do we overcome the daily stressors, societal expectations, and the inherent pressures that come with being an internist? Dr. Mark McLaughlin is a practicing board-certified neurosurgeon, a national media commentator, author of the book Cognitive Dominance: A Brain Surgeon’s Quest to Out-Think Fear, and acclaimed presenter who will be appearing as our final keynote speaker. During his session, he will discuss his personal story on burnout and how he learned how to reconnect with his true motivation for going into medicine.
