Pennsylvania Hospital Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Pinnacle Health at Community Reading Hospital & Medical Center St. Luke's Hospital St. Luke's Hospital is a 436 bed full service, acute care community hospital and Level-1 trauma center which serves a population of 1.5 million. The hospital is affiliated with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania. The hospital's mission, for over 125 years, has been to provide quality, cost-effective care to the patients in our community regardless of their ability to pay. St. Luke's has been recognized as one of the "100 Top Hospitals, one of the "100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals", one of the "100 Top ICU Hospitals". It has been included in U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" for cardiology and heart surgery for three consecutive years. For 50 years, the goal of our Internal Medicine residency has been to train our residents to develop the skills and knowledge base necessary to practice in a primary care setting or to enter subspecialty training with confidence. This goal is accomplished through:
The facilities at St. Luke's hospital are state-of-the-art. The hospital completed a 40 million-dollar building project, which included a new nine-story patient care tower with 231 private rooms, a medical library and a free standing education center. The 36,000 square foot Pricilla Payne Hurd Education Center houses two fully equipped auditoriums and eleven classrooms. The majority of the didactic resident and medical student education is held in this center, adjacent to the new Pricilla Payne Hurd Pavilion. The medical library, which is 8,000 square feet, is home to a 21-station computer laboratory; research and small group study rooms as well as a comprehensive collection of medical texts and journals. The radiology department, a GE test site, regularly performs diagnostic and interventional procedures with some of the most advanced equipment in the world, including PET scanners and a powerful open MRI scanners. As a member of the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Network, St. Luke s has direct access to the latest advances and world-renowned expertise of Penn cancer specialists. The University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center is one of a select group of cancer centers in the nation designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. That link provides great resources for second opinions and consultations to ensure that the cancer care provided by St. Luke s is the best available. The new high-powered linear accelerator at the Cancer Center - one of only 24 in the country - provides high doses of precisely delivered external beam radiation therapy, sparing the surrounding tissue and reducing scarring and side effects. St. Luke's Hospital recently became the first hospital in Pennsylvania to perform surgical procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System, the health care industry's most advanced minimally invasive, robotically assisted surgical system to perform procedures with smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery times. Our Internal Medicine residency is fully accredited by the Council on Post-Doctoral Training of the American Osteopathic Association and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for the training of 24 residents, and 4 traditional osteopathic rotating/transitional positions. Overall, the institution provides training for a total of over 100 residents in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, Podiatry, and Family Practice. Training is centralized at Saint Luke's Hospital. There is an opportunity to do an out-of-house elective as a senior medical resident. A minimum of one-third of the training is in the ambulatory setting including a continuity clinic and office practice experiences in the community. Graduates of Osteopathic medical schools enter our training program in the Internal Medicine Internship track followed by two years of additional internal medicine training. Upon successful completion of our program, our osteopathic residents are eligible to sit for the American Osteopathic Internal Medicine Board examination as well as the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certifying examination. Our 3-year rolling average pass rate on the Internal Medicine Board certification exam is 100%. Upon graduation, our residents have joined local and distant primary care practices, entered practice as hospitalists and enrolled in competitive fellowships. The vast majority of residents who have sought fellowships have received positions at institutions such as Brown University, Henry Ford, Massachusetts General, University of California at San Francisco, University of Pennsylvania and Wake Forest.
