Botsford General Hospital has long been recognized as one of the premier teaching institutions within the osteopathic profession. Over 190 dedicated volunteer teaching faculty, many with appointments to the clinical faculty of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, provide care to an extremely diverse patient population. Sixty-five thousand yearly Emergency Room visits and over 14,000 admissions expose 133 interns, residents and fellows to a wide range of pathology and extensive educational opportunities.
The overwhelming majority of our candidates enter the Medicine Track Internship, completing their General Internal Medicine training and becoming Board eligible in three years. At our institution, this track particularly emphasizes the skills to practice as a highly qualified "hospitalist" or, alternatively, to seek additional subspecialty training at Botsford or elsewhere. Our graduates also consistently report that, where their path has taken them into primary care, their training has served them in that capacity as well. Fellowships at Botsford following completion of training in Internal Medicine include Cardiology, Critical Care, Gastroenterology, and Infectious Disease - each additionally extending the skills and experience of the trainee.
Six groups of General Internists contribute to the education of the Medicine resident, dedicating one physician from their group each month to lead a teaching service consisting of residents, interns and medical students. Rounds are made on a daily basis, enabling close supervision of the house staff, constant interaction and feedback, and the highest quality of patient care. Similar experiences exist on the subspecialty services as well.
To enable the resident to achieve their maximum potential, he or she is assigned a mentor from the attending staff, each of whom is charged with the task of meeting with the resident on a regular basis and overseeing their progress throughout their three years.
A subcommittee of the Department of Internal Medicine, composed of representatives of each of the General Internal Medicine groups, subspecialities and a resident representative meets regularly to evaluate our own performance as well as that of the residents.
The Department of Internal Medicine is especially proud of its graduates having a 100 percent pass rate on the Internal Medicine Board examination and achieving a ranking of #1 in Board scores (of approximately 55 osteopathic institutions) over the past three years. The Department is also pleased with the wide acceptance of many of its graduates into prestigious subspecialty training programs throughout the country. The goal, of course, is to continue these traditions.
Located in Farmington Hills, MI, a suburb of Detroit, there is ready availability of affordable and pleasant housing, numerous cultural and sports events and a wide array of restaurants. Outdoor enthusiasts will be pleased withe the close location of many parks and lakes.
Botsford General Hospital is approved for 18 residents in Internal Medicine, and up to 13 Medicine Track internships. For more information, please call Medical Education at 248-471-8222, Gerald Blackburn, DO, at 248 471-8314 or e-mail at gblackburn@botsford.org.

Mount Clemens General Hospital (M.C.G.H.) has a proud tradition of providing Internal Medicine residency training since 1955. Approved by the American Osteopathic Association, our IM Residency Program has 12 residency positions and two combined IM-EM residency positions. We offer a linked specialty track internship in IM and generally fill six IM track internship positions per year.
M.C.G.H. is located in a safe residential neighborhood about 40 miles northeast of Detroit near the St. Clair River. We are only minutes from the cultural, educational and recreational destinations that abound in our area. Patients seeking our care come from divergent backgrounds ranging from the farming communities north of Mt. Clemens to the suburban areas surrounding the hospital.
Clinical Services of Distinction:
Recognized as the county trauma center, our patient population is diverse and offers a wide variety of pathology. M.C.G.H. is the premiere heart center in Macomb County and offers the latest in cardiac procedures as well as coronary artery bypass surgery. General internists and subspecialist physicians as well as critical care intensivists staff our critical care units. Critical care data is managed on the APACHE data system and this information demonstrates our superior performance in all avenues of critical care compared to national benchmarks. Facilities throughout the hospital are state-of-the-art.
Additional Hospital Affiliations:
The majority of the residency training takes place at the hospital and its related clinical sites; however, we have also affiliations with other area hospitals including:
- Royal Oak William Beaumont Hospital
- Henry Ford Hospital
- Saint John Hospital and Medical Center
- Botsford General Hospital
- Bi-County Community Hospital
These clinical sites provide M.C.G.H. IM residents with additional training opportunities in sought-after subspecialty areas.
Outstanding Ambulatory Training:
Our IM Resident ambulatory clinic is a 4500 square foot facility located just minutes from the main hospital. Interns and residents benefit from true continuity experience by providing longitudinal care to their own panel of patients throughout their training. Clinic facilities include on-site x-ray, laboratory services, procedure rooms and OMT rooms. Residents are trained in office-based procedures such as flexible sigmoidoscopy, endometrial biopsy, arthrocentesis and an array of dermatologic procedures. There are weekly pre-clinic conferences provided by the staff which encompass a multitude of topics important to ambulatory IM practice as well as issues relating to managed care, practice management, billing and third party reimbursement.
Academic Affiliations:
M.C.G.H. is a member of the Statewide Campus System affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (M.S.U. C.O.M.). Uniting the educational resources of M.S.U. C.O.M. and its 19 academic member hospitals, Statewide Campus System orchestrates quality educational programs statewide, bringing recognized clinical leaders together as faculty for monthly IM conferences.
Commitment to Education:
Board certified internists serve as the core faculty for the ambulatory clinic and inpatient teaching service. A two-hour didactic block each week features morning report, Harrison's Club, IM Board Review, and Morbidity and Mortality conference. Other programming includes IM Case of the Month, presented by interns and residents, monthly IM journal club and a core lecture series with topics in general and subspecialty medicine. M.C.G.H. is a member of the Statewide Campus System in affiliation with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, which sponsors educational conferences for IM residents throughout the year.
Reputation of Achievement:
Since 1992, our graduates have achieved a 100% pass-rate on the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine certification exam on their first attempt. Our program consistently ranks in the top third of IM programs nationwide on the American College of Osteopathic Internists Annual Resident In-Service Examination. Graduates of the IM Residency at Mount Clemens General Hospital have gone on to successful careers in general internal medicine as well as a wide variety of subspecialties.
Flexibility to Meet Your Needs:
The M.C.G.H. IM Residency offers a wide array of monthly rotations both on and off our campus. Our residents can choose traditional (hospitalist) medicine or primary care. Throughout their training, our residents staff the hospital resident teaching service. The patient volume on that service includes existing clinic patients, ER admissions and consultations and gives the resident opportunities to assume broader responsibilities in the management of the hospitalized patient. Bedside teaching is emphasized with true teaching rounds. The IM faculty includes many of our own graduates who have become attending staff members of our hospital.
Competitive Package:
The total living package we offer our interns and residents is highly competitive with other hospitals. We know the experience you will gain here will be educational as well as supportive. The M.C.G.H. medical staff is approachable and encourages open dialogue. Our call schedule is a protected, tiered system. On average, our second year residents do 6 to 7 call nights per month, with four months off the call schedule. Our third year residents do 5 to 6 call nights per month with six months off the call schedule. IM track interns in our program have approximately one call night per week plus rotational weekends.
Summary:
The advantages of the M.C.G.H. IM Residency program are best captured in this comment by one of our recent graduates:
"M.C.G.H. provides the student or physician-in-training the best of both worlds: strong didactics and the opportunity to practice medicine hands-on in a vibrant, supportive learning environment." Marjorie Almeda, D.O.
