The majority of the residency training now occurs at three hospitals, St. James Medical Center in Olympia Fields, Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago and. St. James Olympia Fields campus is a 225-bed community hospital in the south suburbs of Chicago. A Level 1 trauma center, with a diverse patient population, St. James offers a wide variety of pathology to resident physicians. The MWU-CCOM program at present has 27 residents in the Internal Medicine program, including the Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine/Pediatrics combined residency programs. The program has 12 Internal Medicine, 20 Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine, and 4 Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency positions. The Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine program was the first established in the United States and is now the largest program in existence. MWU-CCOM has the only Osteopathic Internal Medicine/Pediatrics program. The program offers great flexibility, which allows residents to be well prepared for a variety of practice opportunities, such as ambulatory primary care internal medicine, rural general internal medicine, hospitalist, or preparation for subspecialty training. The residents all take part in a half-day per week continuity of care clinic from the beginning of their training. In the senior year, all residents have the opportunity to expand this to a full-day clinic experience. The medicine faculty is composed of 25 full-time members with appointments at MWU-CCOM. The program has full representation of board certified subspecialists. Each of these groups of subspecialists takes part in the board review program to prepare trainees for the certifying exam. For the last two years, the program has had a 100 percent pass rate on the Internal Medicine certifying examination. Over the last 10 years, approximately 65 percent of trainees have entered internal medicine careers and 35 percent subspecialty training. MWU-CCOM offers subspecialty training programs in cardiology and gastroenterology. Many of the former residents have gone on to be instructors in various training programs. States Dr. Theresa Matzura, ACOI President, "One of my proudest moments was to be speaking with a resident at Dayton, Ohio and have him rave about the high quality of graduates from our program who are now his trainers. We are the trainers of the trainers!" States a former graduate, "I feel that the training I got at MWU-CCOM for Internal Medicine was excellent in preparing me for entering a private, clinical practice. One of the most important aspects of my training was my critical care experience." —Vijayalakshmi Thota, D.O., Class of 1993 Further information on the MWU-CCOM Internal Medicine training program can be found on the MWU website, or by calling 708-747-4000 x1909.
