Members who have completed AOA or ACGME residency training in one or more of the subspecialties of internal medicine are eligible for active or associate membership in one of the ACOI's 12 subspecialty sections. In some cases, subspecialty section membership is also available to those with practice experience in a given subspecialty area. The sections are devoted to providing advanced continuing education and to assisting the ACOI in maintaining quality postdoctoral training standards in their particular subspecialties. The following disciplines comprise the list of ACOI subspecialty sections:

• Gastroenterology
• Geriatric Medicine
• Hematology/Oncology
• Infectious Diseases
• Nephrology
• Nuclear Medicine
• Palliative Medicine
• Pulmonary Medicine
• Rheumatology
• Sleep Medicine

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS
Internal medicine subspecialty areas in which AOA-approved training standards and/or jurisdiction for subspecialty certification or certification of added qualifications do not exist are eligible for special interest group status. In addition to fostering high-quality continuing education, special interest groups may also work toward seeking approval of training standards and jurisdiction for certification that will ultimately lead toward recognition as a subspecialty section.
