Charge of the ACOI Council on Education and Evaluation
- Justification
The ACOI is responsible for the quality of osteopathic internal medicine and fellowship training programs. The College also verifies for the AOA and AOBIM that graduates of the programs meet all requirements. The Council on Education and Evaluation is the expert body within the College that performs these functions.
- Objectives
- Establish training standards for internal medicine residency and subspecialty
fellowship programs;
- Make recommendations to the AOA regarding applications for new programs;
- Make recommendations to the AOA regarding continuing approval of existing
programs;
- Assist program directors in meeting or exceeding established standards and
providing high quality training to residents and fellows;
- Maintain records of residents and fellows in training documenting their
progress in satisfactorily completing training requirements;
- Create sections in such emerging subspecialties of internal medicine as the
Board of Directors shall approve from time to time;
- Conduct an annual faculty development meeting for residency trainers.
- Make recommendations to the AOA on qualified program inspectors.
- Terms of Service
The Council on Education and Evaluation consists of nine members, one of whom is a member of the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine. Each member serves a three-year term, not to exceed two consecutive terms. A term limit may be waived at the recommendation of the President and with the consent of the Board of Directors. A resident or fellow is appointed to a two-year term and serves in a nonvoting capacity. The members of the Council are selected by the President with the advice and consent of the Board of Directors. The Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Council are selected annually by the President.
- Accountability
The Council on Education and Evaluation reports to the Board of Directors at each meeting of the Board. The Council has autonomous decision-making authority within the College on administrative matters. It makes recommendations regarding new program approval, continuing approval of existing programs and the training complete status of trainees to the appropriate AOA committees. The Council makes recommendations on policy matters to the Board of Directors, which has the final say on policy recommendations made to the AOA.
- Responsible Staff Person
The Executive Director serves as the Secretary of the Council on Education and Evaluation. The Postdoctoral Administrative Coordinator and other staff members as may be designated by the Executive Director also assist the Council in its work.
- Self Evaluation Plan
The Council on Education and Evaluation evaluates its performance annually. The evaluation addresses the ways in which the Council has addressed the objectives listed above.
